Nutrient Spotlight: Protein

May 31st, 2022 | By Tisha Riman

In this series, we take a deep dive into trending nutrients and discuss their health benefits. This week, we’re diving into all things protein: what it is, why it matters and how to get more of it in your diet!

What is Protein?

Protein is one of the three macronutrients—the other two being fat and carbohydrates—and is essential for human health. Proteins are made up of links of amino acids that get broken down through the process of digestion and get utilized in everything from building muscle mass, to producing tissues, hair, skin, enzymes and hormones. Because we’re made up of protein, it’s crucial that we get enough on a daily basis!

Not only is protein required for building muscle, it’s also important for bone health, improving metabolism, bumping up satiety and it’s even important for tissue repair and recovery after injury. So we definitely want to make sure we’re eating enough!

Ideally, we’re getting protein at every meal and we’re pairing it with healthy fats and fibre for extra energy and satiety! Protein is found in a wide variety of foods, including both animal and plant foods!

What Foods Are High In Protein?

  • Animal protein, like beef, chicken, pork and seafood

  • Eggs

  • Dairy products, like cheese, yogurt and milk

  • Soy products, like tempeh and tofu

  • Legumes, like lentils, beans and chickpeas

  • Protein powders

  • Nuts and seeds, including almonds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds and chia seeds
