December 15th, 2022 | By Tisha Riman

The cold season appears to go hand-in-hand with ginger—it seems you can’t have one without the other. And it makes sense: what is more warming than a cup of ginger-infused soup when you’re feeling under the weather? Or a freshly baked gingerbread cookie on a cold day?

Not only is ginger a nostalgic seasonal ingredient, but it’s also jam-packed with health benefits. A fragrant and spicy root of the Zingiberaceae family, it is closely related to turmeric, another well-known spice recognized for its health benefits. So in case you need another reason to add some ginger to your diet this winter, here are some of the top ways it can improve your health!

Health Benefits of Ginger

1. Can Improve Digestion

Ginger, is a known carminative, meaning it can help to soothe indigestion and decrease bloating by helping the stomach increase its ability to empty faster. It has also been shown to be effective at alleviating nausea, especially for women experiencing morning sickness.

2. Can Reduce Inflammation

Ginger has also been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, mainly due to one of its bioactive compounds, gingerol. Ginger helps to reduce oxidative stress and decrease pain and inflammation, and may help ease joint and menstrual pain.

3.  Can Boost Immune Function

Lastly, ginger can be a great addition when you’re feeling under the weather! Gingerol can help lower the risk of infections and has been found to prevent the growth of certain pathogenic bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory properties also make ginger a soothing ingredient for sore throats.

How To Add It To Your Diet

If you are just dipping your toes into the world of fresh ginger, do not fret: it is such a versatile ingredient and it can be added to nearly anything! Add freshly grated ginger to soups, smoothies or roasted vegetables. Or, slice it up and add it to hot water with lemon and honey for a soothing tea.
