with Commissary Manager Alice

August 2, 2023

In this series, we take a look at the amazing work being accomplished by members of our community. These are the game-changers, the inspirational leaders, and the passion-driven individuals who are changing our community, our health and our planet.

Q: Introduce yourself: tell us who you are and what you do at Impact Kitchen?

A: Hello everyone! I am Alicia Ayap but I go by Alice. I am a Commissary Manager On Duty working in our Commissary kitchen located inside of Impact King. I was a Registered Nurse back home in the Philippines and came to Toronto working as a Nanny. I have recently finished my Personal Support Worker Program at Medix College.

Q:What has your journey at Impact looked like & what has been the highlight to date?

A: I have been working with the company for 6 years. I first joined Impact Kitchen in 2017 as a part-time dishwasher, where I was also helping with Back of House prep. My manager saw the potential in me and I was promoted to the Commissary Prep/Savoury Team. I have learned a lot about the food products and recipes that Impact offers through this journey. In 2020, I was promoted to Manager On Duty and became in charge of weekend duties.

In 2021, I was appointed as Hype Ambassador Commissary Team in our annual Red Door Family Shelter Holiday Drive. The Commissary Team won the best dressed and most donated boxes.

I have various tasks everyday and continue to learn new things like how to prepare our Grab & Go items including the Sesame Noodle Salad, Fiesta Salad, Jerk Chicken Wrap and Roasted Vegetable Wrap. I have also recently started to help prepping food for some of our off site catering programs.

Q: What is your favourite thing about your role?

A:  My openness, hospitable personality and welcoming attitude are my valuable skills especially to a newly hired team. I share expertise, knowledge and skills of the products and recipes and I believe it is a valuable source when it comes to training new team members. I enjoy collaborating with my team and setting one goal. Also, I always ensure that the safety and sanitation of the area is the top priority.

Q:Outside of work, what lights you up? What are some of your hobbies & interests?

A: Outside of work, having our family bonding lights me up. Walking our dog Cody in the park, gardening and doing arts & crafts are some of my favourite hobbies.

Q: Impacting the community is important to our team, what does ‘community’ mean to you?

A: Community means connection, a feeling of belongingness and having one goal. It also means sharing common interests and healthy lifestyle habits. Nutrition is essential to our well-being. I am inspired by our mission “To empower the community to eat healthy, nutritionally dense foods with a focus on quality and sustainability.” Being a part of the Commissary Team encourages hard work, dedication, motivation and passion.

Q: What is your favourite Impact Kitchen menu item & why?

A: I like our Chicken Noodle Soup, Chocolate Sea Salt Cookies and our Zesty Mexican with steak, chicken or salmon. I like our menu because we use fresh ingredients. It’s nutritious and delicious. Impact Kitchen serves the highest quality, real whole foods and high-quality sources of proteins and healthy fats. I love our baked goods because they are made with natural, minimally processed sweeteners like coconut sugar, maple syrup and honey.

Q: How do you strive to make an Impact every day?

A: I strive to make an impact everyday by coming to work with positivity. I also encourage my friends and family to make healthy choices by encouraging them to try the menu at Impact Kitchen.

We look forward to introducing you to more members of our community who are making an Impact every day.
