Anti-Inflammatory Foods

May 10, 2023 | By Tisha Riman

Why You Need Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Before we dive into the types of anti-inflammatory foods, let’s discuss why we need them in our diet. Anti-inflammatory foods help to reduce chronic inflammation in the body, often caused by oxidative stress and free radical damage, which, left unchecked, can negatively impact our health and lead to chronic diseases.  The reality is that we are all dealing with various forms of stress in our life—whether it be from our diet, our lifestyle or even our environment.

By consuming a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, we can help to reduce our overall stress load and inflammation in the body—which can lead to an increase in both longevity and vitality!

Anti-Inflammatory Rich Foods

Turmeric

This herb is probably one of the most studied anti-inflammatory foods that exist! Cucurmin, the active compound in turmeric, has been well-studied for its ability to reduce chronic inflammation, boost immune health and even improve cognitive function.

Eat it at Impact: Want to up your turmeric game? Try our new Oasis Smoothie. Berries

Berries like blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, are all rich in antioxidants—particularly anthocyanins, which give them their pretty pigment. These powerful anti-inflammatory compounds can help reduce oxidative stress and damage caused by free radicals in the body.

Eat it at Impact: If you want an easy Grab & Go snack that’s rich in fibre and antioxidants, definitely grab our Chia Pudding. A vanilla chia pudding base is topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries and our superfood nut and seed topper.

Ginger

This spicy root is closely related to turmeric, and has been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory benefits, mainly due to one of its bioactive compounds, gingerol. Ginger can help reduce pain caused by oxidative stress and inflammation, making it a powerful spice to include your daily diet.

Eat it at Impact: Our new Grab & Go Sesame Noodle Salad delivers a kick of ginger in a flavourful dressing. Made with sweet potato noodles, roasted broccoli, edamame, red peppers, red cabbage, carrots and a ginger sesame dressing, this is the perfect summer salad! Pair it with a Grab & Go protein for an added nutritional boost.

Omega-3s

Of course, we couldn’t talk about inflammation without talking about omega-3s, the anti-inflammatory polyunsaturated fats found in cold-water fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel) and nuts and seeds, like flax, chia and walnuts. Omega-3s are particularly important because they help to balance our omega-6:omega-3 ratio, which can often be thrown off due to processed foods and industrial seed oils.

Eat it at Impact: With summer around the corner, the Poke Bowl is the perfect way to up your omega-3s! This bowl features tamari-sesame marinated tuna, house-made pickled ginger, seasoned brown sticky rice, edamame, grated carrot, red pepper and avocado smash, topped off with a drizzle of spicy mayo and green onions.

Olive Oil

One of the easiest ways to reduce inflammation is by using extra virgin olive oil as the base of your cooking. Olive oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which not only have anti-inflammatory properties but can also help to balance blood sugar!

Eat it at Impact: At Impact Kitchen, extra virgin olive oil is used as the base in all of our house-made dressings, as well as being used as our primary cooking oil for roasting our vegetables. Our house-made Cashew Caesar Dressing & Honey Lemon Dressing are now available in the Grab & Go fridge, allowing you to enjoy these dressings on your salads at home & in-restaurant.
