5 Healthy Habits

To Add To Your Everyday Routine

September 20, 2023

The best way to improve and maintain your health is to develop habits that energize you, feel good and are easy to incorporate into your everyday life. So if you’re looking for ways to uplevel your daily routine, look no further! Here are the five daily habits that have the biggest impact on your health—and are actually easy to do!

1. Practice Mindfulness

In today’s busy on-the-go world, mindfulness can feel, well, boring. But if you constantly find yourself saying you don’t have enough time to practice mindfulness, then this might be exactly what you need!

One of the easiest ways to get started is with meditation. You can start slow—try for 5 minutes a day—and really just focus on bringing awareness to your breath, your thoughts and your environment. If sitting still with your thoughts isn’t your thing, journaling can be another great way to reflect on your day, plan out your goals and practice gratitude. And if you’re looking to go even deeper with your practice, try doing a cold plunge—not only is it great for bringing awareness to your body, it can also benefit your circulatory system, immune system and resilience to stress.

2. Moving your Body

Regular movement is one of the best things you can do for your health—not only is it important for body composition, like building lean muscle mass, it also helps to strengthen bones (and maintain posture), improve energy levels, maintain brain health and reduce the risk of chronic disease and illness.

If exercise isn’t part of your daily routine, start slow, like a daily walk after dinner. And if going to the gym intimidates you, know that there are plenty of other ways to move your body: join a fitness class, take up swimming lessons, walk the dog, go for a hike, enjoy a bike ride or take up dancing! What’s important is finding something that feels sustainable—and enjoyable—for you. (So if getting up at 5am seven days a week for a HIIT class isn’t your thing, know that you have other options!)

3. Eating Real Food

In order to have the energy to get through long work days, tough workouts and an active social life, we need to be eating the right fuel to keep us nourished! That’s why one of Impact’s core philosophies is to eat real food and provide customers with nutrient-dense, high-quality and minimally processed options.

Some key things to get you started:
Make sure that you’re consuming enough protein at every meal to build and maintain muscle mass, build tissues and cells, and increase overall satiety. If you want to learn more about protein (and carbohydrates and fat) check out this post.

You also want to make sure you’re consuming a wide variety of plant foods. Plant foods— like vegetables, fruit, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds—not only provide us with necessary carbohydrates, but they also give us vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre—which is needed to keep us regular and feed our healthy gut bacteria.

Try it at Impact: the Zesty Mexican is loaded with fibre, micronutrients, protein and healthy fats. Add-on chicken or steak for an extra protein boost!

4. Staying Hydrated

Hydration has so many key functions for overall health: it helps to flush out toxins and keep us regular, is important for maintaining energy levels and helps to regulate the body’s temperature and pH balance.

Of course, the best way to stay hydrated is to make sure you’re consuming enough water—around 2.7-3.7 litres per day. If that seems daunting, know that plenty of other liquids count towards your daily fluid intake—including herbal teas, cold-pressed juices, bone broth and even coffee (yes, really).

Try it at Impact: Now that it’s getting cooler out, it’s the perfect time to grab a chicken or beef sipping broth from Impact Kitchen. Want to learn more about the benefits of broth? Check out this post.  Or, if you’re looking for something more refreshing, Impact Kitchen’s cold-pressed juices are certified organic and made fresh daily!

5. Quality Sleep

Last but not least, we need to make sure we’re getting enough ZZZ’s. Ideally, you should be getting 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Not only is good sleep needed for consistent energy levels, but it also plays an important role in detoxification, blood sugar management and even hunger. So if you’re not sleeping well, you may find yourself struggling more with cravings and snacking more the following day.

When it comes to good sleep, you want to make sure you’re practicing proper sleep hygiene: avoiding blue light at night, sleeping in a slightly cool room, and sleeping in the dark. And if you struggle to fall asleep at night (or stay asleep), consider creating a calming routine (like reading with a cup of herbal tea) before bed, ensuring the bedroom is a place for rest (and not work), limiting alcohol and even eating a snack at night to avoid disruptions in blood sugar that may cause you to wake up.

When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, the goal should always be sustainable habits that you can maintain and that you actually enjoy. Let us know: what are your daily non-negotiables when it comes to your health.
